David talked on Sunday about some image taken from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). I don’t recall the specific name of the object but it reminded me of a Stargate episode. The HST image that freakin rocks my stem cells is the “Ultra Deep Field”, what I see in that image humbles me before the Creator of the universe, and encourages me to respond to the Creator’s love by the importance He places on me.
The image is of a VERY small piece of sky. For reference, if I hold my hand at arms length (1 meter) then the full moon appears to be of similar size to my fingernail on my pinky finger (10 mm in diameter). Well think about something the size of my hang-nail (a 1mm x 1mm box) and that’s the amount of sky covered by this image.
OK so the picture is kind of pretty, but in that image are about 10,000 galaxies that can be seen! You can see some beautiful spiral galaxies in the image, probably not too different from our home galaxy the Milky Way. It’s like some sci-fi artist’s conception of the universe but it’s sci-nonfi, it’s the truth. And this image is only about one thirteen-millionth of the total area of the sky!
So I’m humbled. As Jesus is forming galaxies far far away, he’s also forming Thumper Sturmfels (now about the size of a softball) in Linda’s belly. Hebrews 1:3 - The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.
So also, I’m encouraged to respond to God’s love. Even as Jesus is performing these miracles he does so out of love for me as an individual. I am not forgotten in the vastness of the universe nor the details of the sustaining of every building block. Not because of anything I deserve, but just because Jesus does what he does.
BTW: Last Space Shuttle servicing mission to HST launches late night Oct 7 (early morning Oct 8)…
Meet Judy Webb. She says she’s “just an average girl with an amazing God. I was never that brave, never really outgoing, usually was afraid of new situations. I often times would try to hide who I really was in order to fit into a crowd.” Read more about her story and what she thinks about the Sojourn community.
It is imperative that Christians be like Jesus, by living freely within the culture as missionaries who are as faithful to the Father and His gospel as Jesus was in His own time and place.
