Suffering and the Sovereignty of God26Aug

This is truly a remarkable testimony of a brother who has sweetly tasted the all-satisfying excellency of the sovereignty of God in the midst of lifelong, bitter suffering. To the natural man, this just does not make sense, but to those who treasure Christ, it is an exclamation point–a very convicting and God-entranced exclamation point.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines terrorism as “organized intimidation of a government or a community” and a terrorist as “anyone who attempts to further his views by a system of coercive intimidation.” When one force is substantially militarily weaker than another and no match on the field of battle, terrorism is a historically favorite tactic. As the Chinese military strategist Sun T’zu said over 2,000 years ago: “Kill one, frighten 10,000.”

“Noviana was the only survivor, and suffered the massive slash across her face and neck; the other three girls were decapitated ….. Authorities said Theresia Morangke, 15, Yarni Sambue, 15, and Alfita Poliwo, 17, were killed in the attack. Extract:
As many of you know, my sister took her life on Jan 4 2004, alone, in a cold dark hotel room in Denton, TX. It has been almost three years and the pain is still very real and close. Her death is still more like a dream than a reality ….

I know that there are so many people who go through tragic and meaningless suffering and pain, and I know that what you believe sometimes gets turned upside down by emotions and disillusionment. What you believe and why you believe it is the most important thing during this time as your experience fights for control of your theology. The experience of suffering can suffocate all that you thought you held to so strongly, making you feel like you never really held to it at all. Your previous confidence in faith can yield to the circumstances making your previous confidence seem like a deceptive hypocrisy where the mask of your former trust is taken off to reveal a horrible picture of a weak and dispassionate liar. I know what this is like as I have seen it and looked it in the face.

From the prison of self-survival to the freedom of self-sacrifice23Nov

Sometimes it’s very difficult to make sense of suffering and tradegy - i.e., the recent school bus accident here in Huntsville where several students lost their lives. This seemingly senseless tragedy reminded me another tragedy I had seen depicted in the powerful movie “To End All Wars” (http://www.toendallwarsmovie.com/).

If you have not seen this movie, get the DVD. It is the true story of four Allied POWs who endure harsh treatment at the hands of their Japanese captors during World War II while being forced to build a railroad through the Burmese jungle, and ultimately find true freedom by forgiving their enemies. Caution: this movie is not for children. Rated R for language and intense scenes of suffering.
