When you ask Mark Driscoll anything25Jan

Mark Driscoll at Mars Hill in Seattle is doing two neat experiments.  First, they created a website in which the mass public can submit a question to be answered by Driscoll.  Then, the community voted on the questions that they’d most like Driscoll to answer.  He’s actually preaching sermons based on these questions now.  You can check out video of his sermons at http://marshillchurch.org/.  The top 9 questions have been decided and you can see the results here:  http://askanything.marshillchurch.org/

Recently, Driscoll polled the audience in real time.  He asked them to send questions to him in real time.  He would then answer the questions right there on the spot.  No question was off the table.  Anything could be asked.  The questions are “mature” in nature and deal with topics that you don’t traditionally hear in a church setting.  In fact, this is Driscoll’s take on the questions.  Here is a set of 11 questions and Driscoll’s response.

the secular perspective on porn12Dec

MSNBC has an article on tips to end a sex slump. Written from a secular perspective, I obviously don’t agree with their assumption that sex is healthy for singles. But I do find their take on porn interesting …

“Again, this is mainly applicable to men, regardless of their relationship state. Porn is easy and accessible, kind of like junk food: it may satisfy a short-term craving, but it doesn’t provide any real nutrition. Over the long term it leaves you deadened and disconnected, and guys who spend too much time retreating into a world of digital fantasy are all the more likely to develop sexual and social issues when dealing with real women. So log off the laptop and log in to life.”

While ignoring the real issue of morality, they make a valid point that - even if you consider porn to be a morally neutral act (which it most definitely is not!) - by engaging with it, you’re actually short-circuiting yourself.

Piper on sexual sin25Oct

John Piper has some words of wisdom for us.

“… so many young people are being lost to the cause of Christ’s mission because they are not taught how to deal with the guilt of sexual failure. The problem is not just how not to fail. The problem is how to deal with failure so that it doesn’t sweep away your whole life into wasted mediocrity with no impact for Christ.

Is There Sex in Heaven?03Oct

Peter Kreeft, Doctor of Philosopy at Boston College and regarded by some as the best Catholic philosopher currently residing in the United States, tackles a difficult subject that I’d never try - Is There Sex In Heaven?. He approaches it from a philosophical perspective. Check out his background. While he may ultimately be wrong on this issue (I obviously don’t know for sure), one certainly has to respect his intellect.

Sexual Modesty24Jun

I’ve been reading this book on sexual morality from the Biblical perspective. The author, Daniel Heimback does a marvelous job of explaining true sexual modesty.

Modesty is not about shielding or hiding something dirty; it’s about guarding something exceptionally precious. True modesty (as opposed to false) elevates a woman’s standing in the eyes of men, inspiring them to regard the woman as of great value.

Cole Brown wrestles with the theological meaning of sex and the practical implications for everyone (married, single and divorced) in this article entitled God Loves Sex and So Should You. He’s not afraid to tackle the tough issue of the sexuality of the single and divorced. I’ve reproduced the article in entirety in case the link goes down. Thanks Cole, for the food-for-thought and not being afraid to wrestle with some difficult questions …

Garrett told me about Rob Bell’s new book Sex God. I’m going to order it. Anyone read it yet?

Bob
Fides Quaerens Intellectum

“Bell raises the bar with this evocative follow-up to last year’s bestseller Velvet Elvis….Bell’s book isn’t a sex manual, an exploration of the differences between men and women, or a marriage how-to, though all of that is here.
