Sojourn Worship14Jul

After talking with several people, the idea has been presented to me that some people would like to access the music that is done each Sunday for themselves outside of our Sunday morning gatherings. In response I am going to begin posting the songs we do each week and where you may be able to find them. Hope this is helpful as you continue to worship throughout the week.

Hello Sojourners,

It is a privilege to worship with you each Sunday morning for te few hours that we have together. As we continue to move forward as a body I would love to see more involvement from people who have a heart for the Lord’s and a giftedness in music.

Next Sunday, June 8, we will have band auditions. If you are interested in being involved please fill out an information sheet this Sunday, June 1, and pick up a copy of a couple of songs to practice during the week and play on the audition day. Please spread the word and let others know who may not check the website. Auditions will be 2pm Sunday, June 8. Thanks!

Wesley

Switchfoot is a Grammy-nominated alternative rock band from San Diego, California, United States. The band’s members are Jon Foreman (vocals, guitar), Tim Foreman (bass guitar, vocals), Chad Butler (drums, percussion), Jerome Fontamillas (guitar, keyboards, vocals), and Drew Shirley (guitar). Known for their energetic live shows[1][2][3][4], the three guitarists in the line-up often operate simultaneously, building on the pop sensibilities of Jon’s songwriting, and, rounded out by Jerome’s work on the synthesizer, bringing his industrial roots to the sound, the band works up “the Switchfoot sound”[5] - a melodic crunch of densely layered sound featuring some electronic experimentation, and often driven by hard-charging guitar riffs, while throwing in a few softer, spacey ballads as well.

Switchfoot first gained mainstream recognition after the inclusion of four of their songs in the 2002 movie A Walk to Remember. This recognition led to their major label debut, The Beautiful Letdown, which was released in 2003. It went on to sell over 2.6 million copies and produced the band’s best-known singles, “Meant to Live” and “Dare You to Move”.

According to Jon Foreman, the name “Switchfoot” is a surfing term. “We all love to surf and have been surfing all our lives so to us, the name made sense. To switch your feet means to take a new stance facing the opposite direction. It’s about change and movement, a different way of approaching life and music”.[6]

Let me introduce you to The Penetrators. Our very own Brian Rogers plays a mean guitar in this surf rock band.

From their creative MySpace page:
“Yes, you have stumbled into The World of The Penetrators: agents of The Southern Surf Syndicate on a mission to win the hearts and minds of unsuspecting civilians around the globe to that most glorious and musically pure genre of rock & roll: full-bore, reverb-drenched instrumental surf music.”

Shema Music - free worship music from a Reformed perspective19Jun

FYI for all you musicians - Shema Music offers free music. “Shema Music is a blog that makes available Christian children’s music each week. The texts of the songs will vary in their sources (i.e. Scripture songs, new hymns, writings of famous Christians, etc.) and are written from a distinctly Reformed perspective.”

You can download sheet music. I have no idea as to the quality of the music, but it’s probably worth at least checking out.

Musicians Unite11Apr

It seems that we have a large group of ’closet musicians’ at Sojourn.

I was in a Praise and Worship band for 4+ years. I love playing music especially when you can use it to connect people with Jesus.

I have heard some of you talking about getting together and playing… Anyone interested?

I would love to see us get several worship bands started at Sojourn. I am envisioning a band that is acoustic driven - guitar, bass, hand percussion (djembe, bongos, Latin percussion), vocal, and perhaps keyboard. As things progress add Electric Guitars and full drum kit.

A Humble Hip-hop Artist Answers His Critics04Apr

Bob posted a great blog about music, styles, the sacred and the secular called The Ugly Christian at http://sojournhuntsville.org/blogs/bob_pratico/2007/03/31/the_ugly_christian. Reading that and his blog on the SBC vs. the emerging church (http://sojournhuntsville.org/blogs/bob_pratico/2007/04/03/missouri_sbc_targets_acts29) made me think about critics and how to deal with them.

Here is an answer. Check out the following from Curtis “Voice” Allen. He is a Christ-follower. He is a hip hop artist. I saw a video of him performing at Bethlehem Baptist Church where John Piper pastors. He was well received there. However, once the video posted online, there was a storm of criticisms. He got mad. But it did not turn into sin. Check out the humility he showed in his response:
