The Rise of Culture Wars07Sep

Robert Weber in his book Ancient-Future Faith asserts that future wars are likely to be cultural wars as opposed to wars between civilizations. He points to the rise of Muslims around the world as an example (keep in mind that he wrote this in 1999!) He states, “Muslims will always be Muslims before they will be Americans or members of any other culture of civilization.”

The following is a long, but important read from The Gospel and our Culture Network. This article greatly challenged me a few years ago. I will reproduce it in its entirety. You can go to www.gocn.org for more information.

Neighbor Day11Jun

Jun 24 2007 - 10:30am
Jun 24 2007 - 12:30pm
Etc/GMT-6

Instead of our regular Sunday morning service in the brewery, Sojourners are encouraged to use this Sunday morning to be missional with your neighbors who don’t go to church. (Who is your “neighbor”? ……. Everyone.) Invite them into your house for lunch. Or take them out to brunch. Foster real relationships and be a Samaritan.

The church is still “meeting” this Sunday morning. Just not in the brewery.

Keller on preaching in a post-modern city08Jun

Bob Pratico's picture
written by Bob Pratico on 08 Jun.

Tim Keller has an exceptional article on how to preach the gospel in a post-modern city (not just to post-moderns, but to everyone!).

’ “the gospel” is not just a way to be saved from the penalty of sin, but is the fundamental dynamic for living the whole Christian life–individually and corporately, privately and publicly. In other words, the gospel is not just for non-Christians, but also for Christians. This means the gospel is not just the A-B-C’s but the A to Z of the Christian life. It is not accurate to think ’the gospel’ is what saves non-Christians, and then, what matures Christians is trying hard to live according to Biblical principles. It is more accurate to say that we are saved by believing the gospel, and then we are transformed in every part of our mind, heart, and life by believing the gospel more and more deeply as our life goes on.’ (emphasis added)

David leads a 13-day medical mission trip to Tanzania in East Africa, striving for several things:

1. Do all for the glory of Christ
2. Submit ourselves to the pastoral leadership we are working with - versus an imperialistic mindset
3. Proclaim the gospel of Christ in all our environments
4. Meet physical/medical needs as best as we can
5. We learn from our East African partners in ministry as well as the trip

Escape From Consumer Church17May

Bob Pratico's picture
written by Bob Pratico on 17 May.

Bob Hyatt has written a powerful, eye-opening account of his escape from a consumer church. It is so good, I’ve reproduced it in entirety below.

“In many ways, what we were doing began to make less and less sense. I saw it connecting with fewer and fewer people who were raised outside of church, and I noticed a huge group of people who left church after high school and never seemed to come back …
