Who deserves mercy? I posed that question to a fellow Christian one day. Her immediate response was “all of us.” I suspect the vast majority of people would have the same response.
But there’s a problem here. To speak of “deserving mercy” is a contradiction of terms. By definition nobody who is guilty deserves mercy. The problem is that we’re so used to slick lawyers arguing that their convicted (i.e., guilty) client “deserves” mercy because he worked at the homeless shelter once a month, donated several books to the local library, was a volunteer fireman, never parked in a handicapped spot, never got a speeding ticket, helped little old ladies cross the street and is just an all around good-guy. Oh yeah …. never mind that he also kidnapped, tortured and brutally murdered a child. He deserves mercy.
