Hey Sojourn Family!! [b]We still REALLY need volunteers for the following nights: November: 28-30 Dec: 6-8, 12-13, 15-23[/b] GET YOUR JOURNEY GROUP TOGETHER AND COME SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY TOGETHER!! This Event is held to raise funds for the Alabama Constitution Village Foundation to better serve area students at the EarlyWorks Museums. It's a fun and easy way to give back to Huntsville! [b]What is Santa’s Village?[/b] A family event where kids of all ages can visit Santa in his home, see live reindeer, listen to stories, make crafts, enjoy live entertainment, decorate cookies, dance in falling snow, and much more! Funds raised go to the Alabama Constitution Village Foundation to better serve area students at the EarlyWorks Museums. [b]Where is Santa’s Village?[/b] Downtown Huntsville in Constitution Village [b]What would I be doing?[/b] You would assist children in a very easy craft. Changing Seasons

This is an article written by my brother for the Wilson Lumber Company newsletter. As I write this it is Wednesday morning, the day after the historic election where we selected Barak Obama as our president. I know, I know politics is a dangerous subject here but trust me. This is not an article about politics. See, some of you no doubt were celebrating last night that your guy won and change is coming. Whereas some of you are downright depressed about it because your guy didn’t win and…well, change is coming. I was reminded in the most dramatic of ways this morning of who is really in charge. Have you observed the leaves on the trees lately? They are absolutely breathtaking. There is nothing on earth that man has made that compares. No building, no monument, no structure that even comes close to the changing leaves in the fall. Let me tell you something. My God is in control. Yes this is another one of those dang religious articles. I challenge you to stand in the middle of Jones Valley at 4:00 on a sunny afternoon. Look to the east and see the mountain on fire with colors and tell me there is not a God. It is undeniable. It is without question. If those of us who are believers are silent, the mountains will scream it to us. And as sure as the leaves will come back in the spring, God is on His throne. The power that the government has only exists because God gave it to them. See the scripture of the week to the right. And as the scripture goes, “The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away”. That’s not a prediction, just another reminder of who is in control. So go on and fret if you want about the election or the government or whatever. Or go on and think that everything is going to get better now that whoever is in the white house. Not me, my trust is in someone who will be here a lot longer than 4 or 8 years. And unlike the leaves, He will never change. __________________________

November is National Adoption Month. In lieu of that I would like to share with you a small part of my friend's Cyndi and Luke's journey. They traveled to Ethiopia last month to adopt their new 10 year old son Minte. Cyndi is a faithful blogger so I feel like I have been going through the adoption process with her. Their spiritual, emotional, and physical journey to bring him home has been absolutely precious to watch. Here is her story of going through the citizenship process for her new son. """Several months ago, my husband and I sat in a dingy federal government office, in a part of the city that we have never been before, waiting to be fingerprinted. We were in line with many other people in who were in various stages of their immigration process. We waited alongside them, documents in hand. In that room on that day, there were many different nationalities represented. We were clearly in the minority, and for good reason - we were already US citizens. We were proving who we were and going through the process, although our citizenship in this country was already secure. You see, we were there on behalf of someone else. We were there for our child. We were there to secure citizenship for our precious son, who had yet to even hear about us. We left our comfortable suburb to go to a place where we would not have normally gone, where I (admittedly) felt a little out of place, where I had to allow myself to be fingerprinted, have my background checked and my documents scrutinized as if I were the one becoming a citizen. I did all of that willingly, and would do it again, motivated by my love for my child. I stood there on that day so that he will never have to.I remember thinking, "I'm doing this for you, Minte." Oh, how my heart swelled with love for him at the thought! TODAY, Minte stood before a judge and was declared a citizen of the United States of America. He never had to stand in line at the immigration office... that was done for him. He never has to doubt his citizenship here... that has been secured for him. He will now have all the rights and privileges that belong to a US citizen, a standing that is sought-after by so many. What a picture of the gospel! Jesus' citizenship is in Heaven. His place there is secure, but mine wasn't. He left His rightful, comfortable place and came here, where He was "out of place." He didn't have to, but He did it on my behalf, to secure my citizenship in Heaven, that where He is I may also be. He did this before I even knew Him, while I was yet a sinner. He went where I will never have to go, so that I can someday live in a place better than I could ever imagine. Because of Jesus, my eternal citizenship is secure.""" "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved." The heavens are not clean in your sight, and You charge the angels with folly; I am ready to flee from myself because of my abominations; yet You do not abhor me but have devised means for my return to You, and that, by your Son who died to give me life Your honor is secured and displayed even in my escape from Your threats, and that, by means of Jesus in whom mercy and truth meet together, and righteousness and peace kiss each other. When Your Life Flashes Before Your Eyes

“I have always heard that your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die.” Lester Burnham, American Beauty “They say your whole life flashes before you when you die... It’s true, even for a blind man.” Matt Murdoch, Daredevil “Flashes Before Your Eyes” Title of Lost episode, Aired February 2007 “Me whole life flashed before me eyes. It was really boring.” Babs, Chicken Run So I am 17 and standing beside the free throw line at the sub state basketball tournament. We are 3 seconds away from making it to state. Our absolute best free throw shooter is at the line with the chance to win the game. She is money. She never misses. The shot goes up and rolls around and around and around the rim and then mercilessly falls out. The basketball hits the court and thud, thud, thuds out of bounds. Sometimes, when I close my eyes at night I still see that dang ball rolling out of that rim. I think when I die – if there were to be such a thing as your life flashing before your eyes – I’d see that ball rolling out. But seriously, what would we see? I think I’d see my kindergarten teacher Mrs. York teaching me to read. I’d see my father putting the finishing touches on a kite he had made for me. I would see my Mom reading the Sunday paper to my family on the way home from an Auburn game. I would see my Grandmother teaching me to make cornbread. I would see the look on my brother Robbie’s face when he realized he had accidentally driven me to Mississippi. I would see my brother Joey circling me in his arms and telling me it was going to be alright the morning we left him at college. I would see my husband, sitting in that old apartment in Auburn the first time I ever watched him play the guitar. I’d see my son and I reading “Oh, What a Busy Day” at bedtime. I’d see my son Henry throwing his arms around me and declaring “that’s MY mommy!” I was thinking about the disciples the other night and what they must have been thinking as they watched Jesus being led down the Via Dolorosa on the way to the cross. Did their relationship with Him flash before their eyes? Did Simon see Him calling out to him on that hot and dusty seashore the morning they first met? Did he remember the first miracle he saw Him perform? Did he remember the fear and the awe he had when he watched that miracle? Did he remember the mercy He showed and did he wonder why there was no mercy being shown to Him? Did Simon’s mind drift to when He preached the radical Sermon on the Mount? Did he remember the wisdom and the authority He had when He spoke? Did he remember the smell of Lazarus’ tomb and the first sight he had of Lazarus as Jesus’ commanded him to come out of that tomb? And as he saw Jesus’ body bloody and beaten did he wonder how it had all come down to this? As the seconds ticked off the clock of my last game and that ball bounced out of the basket that was the end of our team’s story. We got back on the bus and went home. But when Jesus was nailed to the cross it was as far from the end of His story as it could possibly be. When Mary Magdalene ran to the disciples and told them He was alive, that he had risen - what flashed before their eyes? Was it the times they had seen him prophesy that he would return? The miracles he had done? I kind of doubt it. I bet it was the remembrance of the love he had shown each and every one of them individually. I bet they remembered a conversation beside a quiet fire. A stout hug He had given them. A time He had laughed at a joke they had made. Mostly I bet it was a feeling of pure joy. We've all heard that the most important part of Jesus’ story isn’t the cross - it’s the empty tomb. It’s what that empty tomb means to each and every one of us. It’s about the love that it took to get to that tomb and about the love that it took to make that tomb empty. Jesus’ story wasn’t done then and it isn’t done now. What’s left up to us is how we are going to be a part of Jesus’ story. __________________________

Three Women Who Raise the Bar

So I had a little teary breakdown in the dressing room at Ann Taylor the other night. It doesn’t happen often and I only allowed it 10 minutes but it got me to thinking about the concept of beauty. The first Bible verse I memorized as an adult mentions beauty. It was Proverbs 31:30. The verse states: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” What women do I think are worthy of praise? In no particular order here are 3 women that I think raise the bar: #1 Elizabeth Eliiot. In college when anyone mentioned Elizabeth Elliot I think I heard the angels sing. Many of you know her as being the wife of Jim Elliot. Elliot was one of the missionaries killed while bringing the gospel to the Auca people in Ecuador. Lots of people would think that if your husband gets killed in the line of duty that should pretty much give you a free pass to say you’re done and fade away. Instead she went back to Ecuador exhibiting amazing forgiveness and grace. She also went on to write over twenty books and speak all over the world. I was privileged to hear her speak in Auburn. She made a powerful call to a more disciplined life. Here are a couple quotes from her: “If we do anything to further the kingdom of God, we may expect to find what Christ found on that road - abuse, indifference, injustice, misunderstanding, trouble of some kind. Take it. Why not? To that you were called. In Latin America someone who feels sorry for himself is said to look like a donkey in a downpour. If we think of the glorious fact that we are on the same path with Jesus, we might see a rainbow.” “I am not a theologian or a scholar, but I am very aware of the fact that pain is necessary to all of us. In my own life, I think I can honestly say that out of the deepest pain has come the strongest conviction of the presence of God and the love of God.” #2 Michelle Duggar. Jim and Michelle Duggar are a pair of ultra conservative parents in Arkansas who have been featured on TLC, the Discovery Channel, and the Today Show. They have 17 natural born children and are expecting another in January. Whether or not you think I she is nuts for having so many kids there are certain things about her I really respect. When you hear that someone has 17 kids you might think of a disheveld mess of a person. Nothing could be further from the truth. She runs her house like a well oiled machine. There are days I somehow manage not to run my house well at all and I only have two kids! She has an amazing amount of patience and such a godly spirit. When I am having a tough day I think “if Michelle Duggar can do it gracefully so can I!” Her kids seem happy, respectful, industrious, and most importantly they seem to love the Lord. Those things don’t just happen they have to be taught and that’s where she comes in. And for a little comic relief: #3 Sandy the Squirrel. If you aren’t familiar with Sandy the Squirrel you must not be watching enough SpongeBob Square Pants. Sandy is a squirrel that lives on the ocean floor by use of a dive suit. She is very brave, very fierce, and very loyal. I like her. __________________________

I’ve been thinking about doubt a lot lately. It all started with a friend who teaches an adult Sunday School class in a church a few towns over. Recently in his class he mentioned that sometimes he has fleeting doubts about things in scripture. When these doubts cross his mind he goes back to the Bible, spends some time in scripture and prayer and eventually he can move on. To say this did not go over well in his class would be an understatement. In fact, it caused a mutiny. Several very vocal members insisted this was sin! Those who doubt – even the fleeting occasional doubt were not “real” Christians. “Its all or nothing” they insisted. “We have t-shirts” they cried, that say “God said it. I believe it. ‘Nuff said!” How could he, a deacon no less, be advocating scrutinizing scripture to the point that you might question doctrines you have always believed. People went to the preacher and questioned his ability to lead his Sunday School class. It got very, very ugly. Doubt – who knew it could cause such a ruckus. Three days later I picked up Tim Keller’s book The Reason for God. He begins the introduction with this quote from the great philosopher Darth Vader “I find your lack of faith – disturbing.” Here it was again – the issue of doubt peeking its head up. Doubt, Keller insists, can be good. “A faith without some doubts is like a human body without any antibodies in it” (Keller, xvi) He proposes that believers should take the time to examine the hard questions – so that they will be prepared to address issues from skeptics, so that their own faith will be strengthened, and so that they will have a greater respect for those that do doubt. Faith can not be inherited. You must examine it and affirm it for yourself, Keller states (Keller, xvii) So what does the Bible have to say about doubt? Of course, its mentioned many times. Here are just a couple. Jude 1:22 says that we should be “merciful to those who doubt.” Hebrews 4:26 says that “Gods’ word cuts through doubts.” And then there is James. James 1:6 says that those who doubt are “like waves tossed by the sea” – Here is the thing about that analogy though – swimming makes you strong, treading water makes you strong, fighting through storm swept waves (if you survive it) makes you strong! And so in fact can doubt make you stronger as a believer. So readers, what is the consensus. Was Plato right? Is the “unexamined life not worth living?” Is doubt good? Can we do it to much? What are the dangers of doubt? And in conclusion anytime a dialog can be opened using an apostle and Darth Vader as your sources it can’t go wrong. __________________________

By receiving this e-mail, (or hearing about it from someone else), you are hereby invited to attend a Super Bowl Party at the Claunch’s Sunday evening!! Show up around 4:30 - 5:00 and bring something to eat - preferabbly hor dourves and we can all share off each other’s. Linda loaded our car with drinks so we have a lot of those, but bring additional as you feel led.

We will have a big TV set up in the den, and other areas for people who want to socialize or a backyard for kids to play in.
