Primer On Evangelizing Postmoderns05Jan
So far this post has 0 comments.Michael Patton as a thought-provoking primer on evangelizing postmoderns. In wrestling with the challenge of reaching the postmodern mindset, he uses the illustration of leading a horse to water, evaluating four different options:
Option 1: Deny the horse is really postmodern.
Option 2: Convert the horse from being postmodern.
Option 3: Change the rope.
Option 4: Change the water.

Madison Journey Group Format29Dec
So far this post has 0 comments.Sorry I missed the discussion the other night - sounds like I missed a lot. Sounds like you guys came up with some awesome ideas from what Eric shared with me. I definitely agree that more open discussion fits our group better. I’ve been trying to figure out how to make this work in a way that we can “challenge each other to love and good works” (Heb.10:24) through this format. Let’s go “out of the box” with our Journey Group, and challenge each other in different ways! What ideas do you guys have to make this work? (this is probably what you discussed the other night, but I wanted to hear it too!)

Madison Journey Group adopts a family for Christmas21Dec
So far this post has 0 comments.Madison Journey Group…
We were able to adopt a family for Christmas. Thanks for all who gave $$$. Special thanks to Cindy and Wendy for going to Target to do the shopping.
We were able to collect approx. $200 to buy gifts and clothing for Beverly and her 2 kids. Wendy and I were able to go meet Beverly this morning and drop off the gifts.
If you would still like to give to the cause please let Wendy know… We could help Beverly out throughout the year (through Lincoln Village Ministries) with different needs she might have. Giving the gifts was a blessing, however, there was a huge disconnect in us being able to relate with each other. There is something to be said for those who build relationships and live with their “tribe”. I was convicted about the necessity of getting our hands and feet “dirty” for the cause of the gospel and reaching out to our tribes. I would like to see us put more action to our message.

So far this post has 3 comments. Our Journey Group had the opportunity to go the Tree Lighting ceremony (AKA - Light a Candle for Peace) and the Madison City Hall last night. This was put on by the Madison Garden Club. The Madison Elementary School choir sang and 5 fifth grade students read essays on “What peace mean to me”.
What blew me is how carefully scripted everything was not to mention “Christmas” or “Jesus” or anything overtly Christian. As the program went on we heard quotes from the “Dali Lama”, the “Jewish Talmud”, Mother Teresa and essay references to “god”, “Jena 6”, Martin Luther King Jr, HIV/AIDS, and stray cats and dogs. We had a time of “prayer” that was addressed to “Our great father” (I believe that was the wording). As everyone gathered around the “Holiday Tree” our mayor got close to the “reason for the season” and attributed the season to “Christ”. Not a strong finish.

So far this post has 6 comments. This doesn’t follow the usual line of contemplation that my usual posts here do, it’s more of just a plea for advice and encouragement.
The last few years, for devotions, I’ve tried to read the Bible through. I’ve tried just reading a few chapters a day via a schedule, or doing it chronologically (this year’s attempt), etc etc. Starting off is generally rough - after you get out of Genesis and into stuff like Numbers and Leviticus, well, motivation has gone down somewhat. I’m still new enough into the beginning of the year that I’m enthusiastic and slog my way through it by (let’s be honest, here) sheer force of will more than anything else, even if I don’t absorb much.

So far this post has 3 comments. Our discussion topics for Journey Group - Madison will follow right in line with David’s Sunday morning lesson. If you want to get a head start I would encourage you to begin reading through the Gospel of John. You can also listen to past PODCAST by going to http://www.sojournhuntsville.org/podcasts.
The theme of the Gospel of John can be found in John 20:30-31…
“And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”
Some things to take notice of will be what others say about Jesus… Who do they confess he is? Also, note the miracle in the book. John records seven specific miracles Jesus did. I wonder why he chose only those seven? Do they have any specific lesson or meaning?
