Tomorrow I will attend a lunch and talk with Huntsville’s Rocket Science Ministries. The lunch is on the first Thursdays from 11:30am-12:30pm at Shoneys at University/231. This is a group of men and women who are committed to both the bible and science. Here is what they say about the lunch: “This is an
opportunity to invite your friends and colleagues to a casual lunch and a brief (15 minutes) presentation on topics related to science and the Christian faith. We offer these lunches to provide a venue for believers and seekers to learn how Christian faith can be consistent with and even strengthened by modern science. Please invite your believing and seeking friends.”
I asked Mark Whorton what he will be speaking on. The following is what he said. Check out his book, Holman QuickSource Guide to Understanding Creation. It is very helpful resource.
“I’m kicking off 2009 – the year of Darwin – with the topic “The evolution of Darwin.” This is taken from an op-ed piece of the same title by Dinesh D’Souza in this month’s Christianity Today magazine. The theme will be to counter the specious arguments that folks like Dawkins make that evolution naturally (logically, insert word here) leads to atheism. I want to begin making a case that it is possible to believe in God and evolution. People do not have to reject evolution to embrace Christianity. So I want to make the point in this talk that it was really a theological reason that eventually drove Darwin to reject God – the problem of suffering – and not his scientific beliefs.
I am convinced that we draw the battle lines at the wrong place and in so doing give aid and comfort to the enemy. We fight over creation and evolution while the real battle line for the souls of the lost is between naturalism and Christian theism. When we fight over creation or evolution we waste our ammo and marginalize our credibility, giving the false appearance of defeat when a round hits us. This false battle line means that when some tenet of creationism is shown to be false then it gives the appearance that Christian theism is false, and that simply is not the case. So, I want to make it clear to seekers first that evolution does not disprove Christian faith and then in later presentations that regardless of the means of origins, Christian theism provides the best answer for the identity of the Originator.”
Come join us!

I’m going to try and
I’m going to try and re-arrange my work schedule today and attend this. I’ve been wanting to dig into evolution myself to better equip myself, and this seems like a great polace to start. Thanks for sharing the invitation David. Part of their description fits in well with yesterday’s 90-day NT reading, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Mt 22:37).
