Check out these Tape Sculptures done by Mark Jenkins. The public telephone is a personal favorite.

Art is both expression and creation. Actually, it should be called “co-creation” because (1) we cannot create anything and (2) God is the one that gives all artists the ability to express and make. Co-creation is a reflection of God’s character. It is a part of the Imago Dei (we are made in “image of God”). As you look at art look for expression of the human condition. See if there is desire for freedom, or apathetic posture, or a proclamation of redemption. Take the story of the Gospel to it. See how Jesus’ story affirms, challenges or finishes the story.

Peace.

Amazing stuff. This is the kind of art I get into, where it looks scary real. Though I get into it, I still don’t “get it” most of the time. Thanks for lesson of what art is (and what it isn’t) as well as the perspective on how to deconstruct it.

I recognized myself and some other Sojourners in there.

I thought the Biblical principle of everything having been created already just meant that we cannot create or destroy mass (conservation of mass). We’ve come to call the act of rearranging things (paint, tape, etc) “creating” art, but I don’t think anyone means they are creating mass when they use it in that context. In sum, I don’t understand how we “cannot create anything.” I create things (rearrange matter) all the time. I just created a post in this thread. What am I missing?

Yes! I’m excited to see a posting about art!

I agree that God gives us the abilities and ideas for art, and uses us as a tool to get it out into the world. Most of my work from college I believe the Lord worked with me and through me to get different messages out in a subtle way to the viewing audience.
