Ben Stein is launching a new movie entitled “Expelled.” It will be in theaters nationwide beginning 18Apr08. He interviews scientists who have been reprimanded for questioning non-theistic evolution. He speaks of Intelligent Design, however I think he focuses on the theory, not the educational agenda. Though I do not subscribe to theistic evolution, my beef is not with them but with atheistic evolution theory.
Comments? Anyone? Anyone? ;)

I’ve found God, says man
I’ve found God, says man who cracked the genome
Of course, he goes on to say:

By the way, I once read that scientists in uber-atheist cultures are turning toward Christianity…especially astronomers. I can’t confirm.
Even so, there is a huge bias against the belief of a God in the technical and scientific fields. People do get in hot water for those kinds of beliefs.

Looks like a very interesting film. I will consider seeing it in theaters. I will definitely see it on DVD. It’s hard for me to imagine scientists showing open prejudice against and even dismissing those with opposing ideas. I expect that of illogical and unintelligent people, but scientists don’t generally fit that mold. You don’t have to agree with opposing ideas (else they wouldn’t be opposing) and you certainly don’t have to like them, but you must rationally ponder, discuss, and debate your claims to be taken seriously in an academic community.
One of my favorite things Ben Stein said in the trailer was (and I paraphrase): “Those who are confident in their beliefs do not fear criticism.” How true.
Expelled from one group….
Expelled from one group…. or Excommunicated from another…. Perhaps the same story of humanity but a different chapter? Nonetheless a parallel I will be thinking about.
The quote that caught my attention was “As a scientist, I am pretty hostile to a rival doctrine” stated by Dr Richard Dawkins from the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. Them’s fighting words, literally. I sincerely hope his quote was not taken out of context, but rather the speaker’s intent is accurately communicated. And it would be interesting to see how he defines his “doctrine” against which everything else rivals. I’ll see for myself when I watch the movie, but I’ll rent it on DVD and pick up 3 doublecheeseburgers and 2 chicken sandwiches on the way home for the same price as a movie ticket.

That struck me as odd too,
That struck me as odd too, Rich. Should a scientist be ’hostile’ to any idea? What is his ’doctrine?’ Why is it ’doctrine’ and not simply a rival ’theory’ or rival ’evidence?’ That quote (as you said, if not taken out of context) is pretty damaging.
Lots of interesting
Lots of interesting discussion about the movie here: http://news.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/21/0017251
Only read the “Score:3” or above comments if you are going to check out the discussion.

Read some more info on the
Read some more info on the movie yesterday. Apparently after Ben Stein interviewed Richard Dawkins Mr. Stein offered to take Mr. Dawkins out to dinner (presumably to further their conversation). Mr. Dawkins declined, and insisted that he be paid immediately and that his payment be adjusted for the current exchange rate.
