Is There Sex in Heaven?

Peter Kreeft, Doctor of Philosopy at Boston College and regarded by some as the best Catholic philosopher currently residing in the United States, tackles a difficult subject that I’d never try - Is There Sex In Heaven?. He approaches it from a philosophical perspective. Check out his background. While he may ultimately be wrong on this issue (I obviously don’t know for sure), one certainly has to respect his intellect.

I don’t agree with everything he says … but I agree with much, in particular his examination of what it means to be a sexual being in this life. His article is extremely thought-provoking and well thought out. His philosophical intellect is brilliant.

Yeah, Peter Kreeft is pretty much the man. He’s written a bunch books on apologetics (more about “mere” Christianity than Catholicism) and the closest thing that the current generation has to a modern incarnation of C.S. Lewis, in my admittedly humble opinion.

I think if anyone is interested in reading more of his stuff, the books below are great places to start - they’re both written as a dialogue - think the Socratic dialectic style … but actually more fun to read than you’d think, given that introduction:

  • Socrates Meets Jesus - Socrates, reincarnated, goes to a (theologically liberal) seminary and attempts to figure out why people think what they do about the claims of Christ.

  • Between Heaven and Hell - it’s a little-known fact that within 24 hours of JFK being assassinated, C.S. Lewis and Huxley also died. This conversation imagines what it would be like if they were all discussing their respective worldviews … although it is set after they all die, hence the title.

Bob, thanks for posting this - it makes me want to go grab a copy of the “Everything You Wanted to Know About Heaven” book that he wrote …

Agreed. I’m gonna’ have to put a copy of his book on my wish list. Sad when you realize that many evangelicals would dismiss him outright for being Roman Catholic. I think he has much to say that’s worth hearing. Scholars of his caliber him can teach us what it really means to think instead of the cotton-candy fluff on the evangelical best-seller list.
