Changing Tires for Jesus

I was thinking about David’s message this morning and the reference to 1 Cor 10:31: Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

One of the most humble, godly, spiritually-powerful men I ever met was Ed Drew, a U.S. Army chaplain in Italy 20 years ago. Ed shared with me how, before he came back on active duty as a chaplain, he was working as a tire changer at Sears. He was also restless and unfulfilled ….. until he came to the point where he told the Lord he was willing to change tires for Him for the rest of the his life, if that was what God wanted. Ed had come to the point in his life where he was literally (and joyfully) willing to change tires for Jesus for the rest of his life. Why? The principle articulated in 1 Cor 10:31 took hold in his life.

I had to learn the same lesson 30 years ago when I arrogantly, foolishly and wrongly thought my talents and abilities were being wasted where I was at the time - and that I could be more effectively serving God elsewhere. God graciously used a mature servant of His to gently point me to 1 Cor 10:31. After at first resisting it, I embraced it and my life then took on new meaning. Now whatever I do, big or small, I do with 110% effort. Life is an amazing adventure.

There are no menial tasks in the kingdom of God. Christ, as the Creator (i.e., John 1:3; Col 1:16) brings meaning to all the creation. All of life ultimately finds its’ highest expression and meaning in Christ. Artist, Historian, Parking Lot Attendant, Engineer, Landscaper, Musician, Physicist, Hair Stylist, Astronomer, Actress, Dancer, Mechanic, Mother, Farmer, Jeweler, Toll collector, Brick-layer, Architect, Cop, Receptionist, Garbage collector, Care-giver, Doctor, Dentist, Banker, Stock-brocker, Nurse, Author, Teacher, Journalist, Photographer, Cashier, Philosopher, Athlete, Brewer and even tire-changer….. all it and everything else finds meaning in Christ.

Unfulfilled? Dissatisfied? Feel like your work is meaningless? Trying doing it for Christ. 110%. Go for it!
